THE METROPOLITAN GAZETTE $2M HEIST AT DOWNTOWN JEWELRY DISTRICT: "GHOST" BURGLARS VANISH IN BROOKLYN Police baffle as high-tech security system bypassed without triggering single alarm. NEW YORK — Detectives with the NYPD’s Major Case Squad are searching for a team of sophisticated burglars who pulled off a clean $2 million diamond heist in Brooklyn’s historic Jewelry District late Thursday night, leaving investigators with almost no physical evidence. According to authorities, the break-in occurred between 2:00 AM and 4:00 AM at Vanderbilt & Sons Fine Jewelry on Fulton Street. The perpetrators gained access to the high-security vault by cutting through a reinforced brick wall from an adjacent, abandoned subway access corridor—a route that was absent from public city maps. Bypassing the Network What makes the crime particularly striking to law enforcement is the precision involved. The thieves used high-end electronic jamming equipment to disable motion sensors and silent alarms, while simultaneously looping a 12-second clip of pre-recorded security footage onto the building's live surveillance monitors. "This wasn't a smash-and-grab," said Deputy Chief Marcus Vance during a press briefing Friday afternoon. "This was a highly coordinated, professional operation executed by individuals with deep technical expertise and inside knowledge of the building's infrastructure." "They were in and out in less than forty minutes. They didn't touch the silver or lower-grade gems—they took only loose, high-carat certified diamonds." — Detective Marcus Vance, NYPD A Single Clue The store owner, Arthur Vanderbilt, discovered the empty safe Friday morning at 7:30 AM when opening for business. While the vault was wiped clean of fingerprints and wiped down with chemical agents to destroy DNA, forensic teams recovered a single dropped item near the subway corridor entrance: an unregistered, military-grade thermal lens cap. The NYPD is reviewing street-level traffic cameras from the surrounding block and appealing to any delivery drivers or residents who were in the Fulton Street area between 1:00 AM and 5:00 AM on Thursday to come forward with dashcam footage. A reward of $100,000 has been offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the individuals involved. Beloud
