Yesterday we arrived in Greece for a completely different kind of diving than what we're used to back home — a region layered with WWI and WWII wrecks, Roman and ancient Greek remains, all sitting in some of the most beautiful water in the world. So much to explore here. We started it off right: our first dive was on the HMS Perseus, a British submarine lost on December 6, 1941, when she struck an Italian mine while cruising the surface off the coast of Kefalonia. She went down fast, taking 59 of the 60 men aboard with her. There's one of the wildest survival stories of the entire war attached to this wreck. A stoker named John Capes escaped through an aft hatch using emergency breathing gear and made a solo ascent from roughly 170 feet, then swam miles to shore in the dark. Local islanders hid and protected him for over a year before he made it back to Allied hands. He was the only one who survived that night. She rests today at 52 meters intact on the sandy bottom, just off the south coast of Kefalonia. The Perseus memorial on Kefalonia carries a line straight out of Homer's Odyssey — written about this very island: "All the survivors of the war had reached their homes by now, and so put the perils of battle and the sea behind them."
