When I was a kid back in the 60's my parents told me that if ever I had a problem, & they weren't around, ask a copper. I had young friends whose dad's were coppers, & I thought that was cool. When I was a teenager & approached by coppers I trusted & respected them. A few years later, in the 80's, when my own teenage daughter was caught misbehaving, the cops handled the situation perfectly - with compassion & common sense. She never got in trouble again. 40 years later, none of this is true any more... I would never tell my grandkids "ask a copper". I tell them to never engage with the police unless they have to - & then say as little as possible. Like many people, I no longer either respect or trust our police, nor the government they represent. That is not only very sad, it is also very bad for our country &, if the situation doesn't change very soon - if our government & police can't prove they can be trusted again - severe civil unrest is almost inevitable, & it will be entirely the fault of those who govern & police us.
