Ottawa wants you to believe that bills C-11, C-9, C-22, and C-8 are unrelated. One is about streaming. Another about lawful access. Another about cybersecurity. Another about hate. Neat, separate, harmless? That is a lie. And it’s time we stopped looking at these bills one by one and started looking at where they’re taking us. Because when you line them up, a clear pattern emerges. Not a government solving problems. A government steadily expanding its power over what you see, what you say, and who’s watching you do it. Bill C-11 – The Online Streaming Act, already law. The CRTC can pressure platforms to tweak algorithms to shape what you can easily find online. So dissidents, smaller creators, and inconvenient opinions could become much harder to find. Bill C-9 – The Combating Hate Act, at consideration in committee in the Senate. The language is so broad that it could criminalize peaceful protest and protected speech. It could be used to justify silencing Canadians. Bill C-22 – The Act respecting lawful access, at consideration in committee in the House of Commons. It lowers thresholds for police to get your subscriber information. Metadata retention for up to a year even if you’ve done nothing wrong. Bill C-8 – The Act respecting cyber security, at consideration in committee in the Senate. It gives the government broad oversight to direct telecom providers to do things, or stop doing them, in the name of security. Once that door opens, mission creep is guaranteed. Deeper state leverage over communications infrastructure people rely on every day. Taken together? One law controls visibility. Another punches further to control speeches. Another expands access to your data. Another increases government leverage over telecom networks. This is not a glitch. This is the direction. freedom doesn’t die in a single blow.
